In Greek mythology, Empusae were fearsome daimones, who were servants of Hecate. As a group, they assumed the role of the singular Empusa, daughter of Hecate and the spirit Mormo. They had a leg of bronze and a hoofed foot of a horse.

They were often associated with other fearsome daimones such as Lamia and Mormo, which, just as empusae, were considered demons or specters in later mythology and in other pagan religions. Empusae often seduced men (especially sleeping men) in order to feed on their flesh and blood.
