Electra was the name of one of Agamemnon and Clytaemnestra's two daughters. She was the sister of Iphigenia and Orestes. After the sacrifice of Iphigenia to Artemis, Clytaemnestra began an affair with Aegisthus, Agamemnon's cousin. When Agamemnon returned from sacking Troy, he was killed by Clytaemnestra and Aegisthus. Fearing for her brother's safety, Electra smuggled Orestes to the court of their uncle Strophius.

Electra herself remained at Mycenae. When Orestes returned with their cousin Pylades, the three plotted to kill Clytaemnestra and her lover. After they had avenged Agamemnon, Orestes was pursued by the Erinyes, though Electra wasn't. Orestes was finally pardoned by the gods and Electra married Pylades.
