The Flying Dutchman is perhaps the best known of all ghost ships, originating from 17th-century nautical folklore.

Myths and Legends[]

According to legend, it can never make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. If spotted by another ship, its crew members will try and send messages to land, and is considered by sailors to be a bad omen.

Appearance[]

It is a ship that looks worn out and should not be able to continue sailing.

Modern Depictions[]

In the Disney movie series Pirates of the Caribbean, the Flying Dutchman serves as the ship of Davy Jones, captain for life and (originally) commissioned to ferry the souls of those who died at sea. The ship can only make port every ten years.
