Chitragupta is the Hindu god of scribes. He is the son of Brahma and is tasked with keeping track of all the deeds done by all life forms on earth, to help Yama decide where to send them upon their death. He is the ancestor of the Kayastha caste of scribes.

Mythology[]

Chitragupta is said to have been created by Brahma when he visited Yama's realm. Yama was having a hard time working out who to send where, so virtuous people ended up in places like hells and evil people could get into heavens. When Brahma saw the trouble Yama was in, Brahma created him out of pure thought.
