Itzamna is considered the founder of Mayan culture, a creator god and the patron of priests and scribes. Kinich Ahau, the sun god, is considered one of his aspects.
Itzamna taught the Mayans art, literature, medicine, science, sculpture and agriculture (particularly regarding maize and cacao), and created the calendar. He himself is a creator and healer capable of resurrecting the dead.
According to some sources, he is the father of the Bacabs and the son of Hunab-Ku.
