The Lacadaemonids were the descendants of Lacadaemon; son of Zeus and a mountain nymph. Lacadaemon married Sparta, the daughter of King Eurotas of Laconia and succeeded his father-in-law to the throne. The land was renamed after him and the city after his wife.
