The Lacadaemonids were the descendants of Lacadaemon; son of Zeus and a mountain nymph. Lacadaemon married Sparta, the daughter of King Eurotas of Laconia and succeeded his father-in-law to the throne. The land was renamed after him and the city after his wife. Seven of his descendants ruled in unbroken succession for five generations until the kingdom passed through the marriage of Helen and Menelaus to the Atreids. They frequently intermarried with the Atreids and Inachids
