- This article is about the mythological character Lacedaemon, for the place, see Spartans
Lacedaemon was the name of a son of Zeus. He became the king of Laconia by virtue of his marriage to Sparta, the Queen. He later renamed his capital after her and the land itself came to bear his name. Among his descendants were Penelope, Queen of Ithaca, Clytaemnestra, Queen of Mycenae, by adoption, Helen of Sparta and, in the female line, Perseus and Heracles (as descendants of his daughter Eurydice of Argos). He was succeeded by his son Amyclas
