Prithvi is the goddess of the Earth. She is also known as Bhumi. She is married to Dyaus and by him is the mother of Ushas, Ratri and Parjanya. She sometimes takes the form of a cow.

Mythology[]

Etymology[]

The name Prithvi may come from the Proto-Sanskrit word kṣámyaḥ that have her origin in the Proto-Indo-European Goddess*Dʰéǵʰōm.

Hinduism[]

Prithvi was a goddess that personifies the earth, she was an important goddess in the vedicnism, in the Purana Hinduism Prithvi was renamed as Bhumi but also was the wife of Varaha (Vishnu).

In Indonesia she is call Pertiwi.

Buddhism[]

In early buddhists text Prithvi was who protec to Buddha Gautama from Mara, also being witness of the Gautama´s ilumination.

in the chinese Buddhism, Prithvi is one of Twenty-four devas.

In East Asian Buddhism, Prithvi is one of Twelve-Devas that personifies the elements, in the Prithvi´s case she is the personification of the Earth and is called Ji-ten, being the others devas: Sui-ten (Varuna), Ka-ten (Agni), Taishakuten (Indra/Sakra), Fūten (Vayu), Enmaten (Yama), Nitten (Surya) and Gatten (Chandra).
