Ram and Sita as a couple (bazaar art, 1950's)

Sita is a mythological character in the hindu epic Ramayana. She is the wife of Rama and avatar of Lakshmi. She is the daughter of the Earth goddess and king Janaka, who found her in his royal garden, treated her as his own daughter. She was then married to Rama who had broken Shiva's legendary bow. She then went with him into the forest when he was exiled. She was then abducted by Ravan and forced to marry him but she refused. Se was then saved by Rama. He doubted her purity, so she was swallowed by her mother the Earth goddess after giving birth to Rama's twin sons Lava and Kusha.
