Template:Hindu infoboxSurya is the Hindu god of the sun. He is the younger brother of Indra. He numbers among the Navagrahas, or nine planets. He is married to both Saranyu and Chhaya. He is the son of Aditi.
Family
Surya was first married to Saranyu, who represented the dawn. Later, unable to bear the extreme radiance of her husband, she created a shadow of herself and left. Surya then consorted with the shadow, Chhaya.
By Saranyu, Surya is father to the Ashvins, Yama and Yami.
By Chhaya, Surya is father of Shani , the planet Saturn.
Characteristics
Surya is often depicted with four arms and riding in a horse-drawn chariot. His four arms hold a conch shell, a chakra and a lotus flower. His chariot either has seven horses, or one horse with seven heads. They represent the colours of the rainbow.
