Váruṇa (as he known in the Veda or Varûn as in the Avesta) is the Hindu god of the ocean and the night sky. He is the son of Aditi. He is an omniscient god and represent the eternal ocean as well as the sky at night. The stars are his spies and watch the movements of men. His consort is an obscure goddess named Varuni.

Characteristics[]

Váruṇa is usually portrayed on his vahana (mount), Makara, a sea creature that is half terrestrial and half aquatic, similar to a crocodile.
