Vulcan is the Roman counterpart of the Greek god Hephaestus. Vulcan is the god of fire and blacksmiths. From his name the adjective "volcanic", that is, pertaining to volcanoes, is derived. This is because he was believed to have used volcanoes (still referred to as normal mountains at that time) as his underground forge.
